It’s a medical drug made from Botulin toxin that comes from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Botox injections comprise onabotulinumtoxinA, originating from the microbe responsible for causing botulism, a type of food poisoning. Botox is used to temporarily remove wrinkles and fine lines by paralysing facial muscles.
Anti-wrinkle injections can last anywhere between three to six months, depending on the treatment you have opted for. However, the effect is influenced by many internal factors like your metabolic rate.
Everyone’s body is different and reacts differently to such treatments. Typically, you will start noticing an improvement within 12-14 days after your first session — depending on the treatment. In some cases, patients see results sooner.
Getting anti-wrinkle injections may feel much like a gentle pinprick. Before administering the injection, however, we use a local anaesthetic or numbing cream to mitigate any discomfort in the targeted area.
On the day of the treatment, an anaesthetic cream is first to numb your skin. Injections are then administered around the area of your face being treated and then massaged. The treatment may be uncomfortable but should never be painful. The entire process usually takes between 20-30 minutes — depending on the treatment you have opted for. For example, a neck lift Botox takes somewhere between 15 to 30 minutes.
Although aftercare and side effects will be discussed at your appointment before the treatment is carried out, there are a couple of things you can do to ensure you get the best results from Botox. For starters, take care of the targeted body part — be it face or neck — before you have the injection. Apply a gentle cleanser and moisturiser regularly, and avoid harsh products such as retinoids and exfoliants. Use sun protection. Eat lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, fish, and whole grains. Keep yourself hydrated always.

As long as you’re generally keeping healthy and do not suffer from any skin diseases or infections, you can opt for the treatment. However, Botox isn’t recommended for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. It is also not advised for people who’re allergic to any of the ingredients found in these injections or have a neuromuscular disorder such as myasthenia gravis. There are many brands of anti-wrinkle relaxing injections. However, only three are licensed within the UK, namely Allergan Botox, Azzalure and Bocouture. At Maya Aesthetics, the original Botox made by Allergan is preferred. But if the patient has some other preference, then that can be used instead.
Aftercare
advice
- Don’t apply any makeup for the first 12 hours post treatment to prevent the risk of infection.
- Keep upright for 4 hours post treatment.
- Keep facial movements minimal and do not touch the injected area as that increases the risk of infection.
- Please avoid any facial or beauty treatments for 14 days post treatment, this includes: facials, brow waxing, microblading and dermabrasion.
- Avoid using any products containing alpha-hydroxy.
- Headaches may occur – take paracetamol if necessary and stay hydrated.
- Apply a cold compress or pack (not ice or frozen) to minimise the swelling.
- Please don’t drink alcohol for 48 hours pre- and post-treatment because it increases the risk of swelling and bruising.
- Review appointments must be between day 14-21. Top-ups do not make Botox last longer and are for corrective purposes only.
- Avoid direct sunlight and exposing yourself to extreme temperatures, i.e., sunbeds, saunas and steam rooms, for 14 days post treatment. Stay in the shade and apply SPF 50 regularly. Also, keep away from chemical peels, bleaching, tweezing, or using any hair removal cream on the treated area.
