Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Dermal fillers are injections that usually comprise a naturally occurring and beneficial substance found in our bodies called hyaluronic acid, which helps plump the appearance of lips and smoothen fine lines and wrinkles. As we age, our skin starts producing less of this acid, making the skin thin and dry. Natural lines and wrinkles begin to deepen, and lips eventually lose their fullness, with lines appearing around the mouth and nose. Dermal fillers restore volume and fullness in the face.

Dermal fillers are beneficial in plumping thin lips, softening wrinkles and creases, enhancing shallow facial contours, and redefining and lifting aged skin. These minimally invasive injections have no downtime and can instantly help you achieve your ideal appearance conveniently. Plus, dermal fillers are safe and completely reversible.

Some patients may notice mild swelling or soreness after receiving a dermal filler injection. However, this is temporary and subsides shortly afterwards. Maya Aesthetics takes all necessary precautions to ensure the treatment is administered correctly so that it doesn’t result in more severe complications, such as allergic reactions or infections.

We will decide if we are to proceed with the treatment only after discussing your detailed medical history and assessing your needs and expectations from dermal fillers. The procedure is not advised for those who are currently taking certain medicines, particularly drugs that affect the immune system. Dermal fillers cannot be used in pregnant or breastfeeding women and people with an autoimmune disorder. The treatment is not recommended if you suffer from any skin infection in or near the treatment area or are unwell (even having a cold counts here). It is not suitable for patients with bleeding or scarring problems.

Dermal fillers can last for up to a year, depending on what treatment you have. However, the effect is influenced by many internal factors like your metabolic rate, which decides how fast the body breaks down the filler. Lip augmentation fillers, for instance, have a shorter lifespan and are naturally dissolved by the body after six months.

Dermal fillers are applied through a series of small injections. They may feel much like a gentle pinprick. Before injecting the dermal filler gel, we use a local anaesthetic to numb the area in question. Lips, for instance, comprise many nerve endings and can be more sensitive than the other areas of the face. We use a numbing cream to mitigate any discomfort.

On the day of the treatment, an anaesthetic cream is first to numb your skin. Injections are then administered around the area of your face being treated and then massaged. The treatment may be uncomfortable but should never be painful. The entire process usually takes between 20-30 minutes — depending on what is being treated.

Although aftercare and side effects will be discussed at your appointment before the treatment is carried out, there are a couple of things you can do to ensure you get the best results from dermal fillers. For starters, take care of your face before you have the injection. Apply a gentle cleanser and moisturiser regularly, and avoid harsh products such as retinoids and exfoliants. Use sun protection. Eat lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, fish, and whole grains. Keep yourself hydrated always.

Aftercare
advice

  1. Don’t apply any makeup for the first 12 hours post-treatment to prevent the risk of infection.
  2. Keep upright for 4 hours post treatment.
  3. Keep facial movements minimal and do not touch the injected area as that increases the risk of infection.
  4. Please avoid any facial or beauty treatments for 14 days post treatment, this includes: facials, brow waxing, microblading and dermabrasion.
  5. Avoid using any products containing alpha-hydroxy.
  6. Headaches may occur – take paracetamol if necessary and stay hydrated.
  7. Apply a cold compress or pack (not ice or frozen) to minimise the swelling.
  1. Please don’t drink alcohol for 48 hours pre- and post-treatment because it increases the risk of swelling and bruising.
  2. Review appointments must be between day 14-21. Top up’s do not make Botox last longer and are for corrective purposes only.
  3. Avoid direct sunlight and exposing yourself to extreme temperatures, i.e., sunbeds, saunas and steam rooms, for 14 days post-treatment. Stay in the shade and apply SPF 50 regularly. Also, keep away from chemical peels, bleaching, tweezing, or using any hair removal cream on the treated area.
  4. In case of any concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us on 07956 695992.
